Chelsea fear Mason Mount could be tempted by Liverpool or Manchester City to take advantage of the club’s ownership crisis.
The England star, 23, is one of the Blues’ underpaid players at around £70,000 a week.
Mount has only two years left on his deal but sanctions prevent the club from offering him a new contract.
Rivals Liverpool and City are watching closely as concerns grow at Chelsea that Mount could be tempted to a more lucrative contract.
Kop boss Jurgen Klopp has publicly expressed his admiration for the Three Lions midfielder.
City’s Pep Guardiola is another major fan.

Mount’s current deal was signed back in 2019, before he played for the Blues’ first team.
Chelsea had intended to start talks on a long-term deal before former owner Roman Abramovich was subjected to government sanctions over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
But, though, it is understood that Mount – who has been with Chelsea since he was six – will not be among the club’s top earners as he is an academy graduate rather than an extravagant signing.
It is unlikely that neither Liverpool nor City will be in a position to make an offer this summer.

But it would completely change the picture should Mount go into the fall without getting close to a new decade, and then they make a move.
It wasn’t helped by the situation that Newcastle had suddenly become a serious player in the market, with boss Eddie Howe – who had attempted to loan Mount on loan at Bournemouth – also watching with interest.
They will be able to devise a package that rivals anything City, Liverpool or Chelsea can invent, and within a year could be a lot closer to offering the kind of footballing challenge that would entice a player of Mount’s caliber.
